New Delhi: The Lok Sabha today passed the Goods and Services Tax (GST) Bill. The Congress party boycotted the voting session. The relevant Constitution amendment bill was passed by a two-thirds majority in the House, with 336 members voting for it.
Finance Minister Arun Jaitley said, "This bill has passed through the Standing Committee for two and a half years, number of meetings of authorized committees and then an agreement was made .I beseech you rise above party considerations.
The GST bill, which looks to amend the constitution to give effect to a united tax government in the country, its needs the support of two-thirds majority in each house. In the Lok Sabha, the government needs only a little help to touch absolute majority.
But in the Rajya Sabha, where the government is in abject minority, the bill cannot pass without Congress support. The Congress has made its stand clear that in the Rajya Sabha it will ask for the bill to be sent to a select committee.
