The moderate cleric will take up the presidency in August.
Tehran: Hassan Rohani won the Iranian presidential election on Saturday. Rohani unlike former President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad is a moderate cleric.
Rohani’s victory over fundamentalist Mahmoud Ahmadinejad is being looked from various angles mainly his attitude towards the western nation.
Rohani’s victory may not change the Iran’s foreign policies, or resolve its relations with the west. But as a President he may influence the decision-makings at the diplomatic levels.
The moment election result announced Rohani’s supporters began shouting the slogans outside his office in Tehran, "Long live reform, long live Rohani," and "Ahmadi, bye bye". Rohani will take up the presidency, the highest elected office of Iran in August. Mahmoud Ahmadinejad who ruled the nation for eight years with his two consecutive election victories was legally barred from contesting it for the third time.
