Mumbai: Javed Ahmed, Director General of Police, Homeguards, has been appointed as new Mumbai Commissioner of Police. Rakesh Maria, the current Mumbai police chief has been promoted to the post of Director General of Police.
The appointment which comes amidst the top cop supervising the Sheena Bora murder case in which media mogul Peter Mukerjea’s wife Indrani has been arrested has taken many by surprise. While he was scheduled to be promoted later this month, the sudden order has surprised many.
In order to accommodate Javed as the new CP, the state government has elevated the CP post from an Additional Director General of Police rank to that of the Director General of Police rank.
“We have upgraded the post and appointed Javed Ahmed as the new CP while Maria has been promoted as Director General, Homeguards,”Additional Chief Secretary, Home, KP Baksi told The Indian Express. Javed took charge on Tuesday afternoon. Maria, who has solved the 1993 Bombay bomb blast case, is one of the most decorated officers of the force.
Javed is said to be retiring on January 31, 2016.
