Kolkata: Suzette Jordan, the Park Street rape survivor died on Friday at a city hospital. Jordan was assaulted inside a moving car in February 2012 that triggered nationwide outrage.
“She passed away in the morning. She was suffering from health problems and got admitted to a city hospital for last few days,” Joint CP (Crime) Pallab Kanti Ghosh told to the media.
The initial reports suggest that she died of multiple organ failure. She was 40 and is survived by two teenaged daughters. In February 2012, Jordan was gangraped in a moving vehicle in Kolkata’s Park Street. The outrage that followed her rape was marred by political implications. It was called a sajano ghotona (a set-up) by the Chief Minister, Mamata Banerjee, and a CPM conspiracy to bring down the Trinamool government.
“Why would I get raped to bring down her government?” Jordan had said in an interview. In 2013 she came out in the public eye as the Park Street rape survivor to “empower” herself and other victims of sexual assault. “Why should I hide? I haven’t done anything wrong,” she said.
