Beijing: Xinjiang province of China was jolted by a powerful 6.6 magnitude earthquake today. The quake caused widespread damage to residential buildings and reportedly injured at least 24 people.
At around 05:07 AM (local time) strong tremors were observed in Urumqi the capital of Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region that shacked residents out of their beds and lead to temporary power outages.
According to the China Earthquake Networks Centre (CENC) the epicenter of quake was a mountainous region along the border of Hejing and Xinyuan provinces.
The government of Ili Kazak Autonomous Prefecture, which administers Xinyuan said, “A large number of residential houses were toppled or damaged in Xinyuan province and hundreds of cattle were killed after their sheds collapsed. The quake also triggered landslides and cave-ins on several national and regional highways in Xinjiang, bringing traffic to a halt. At least 24 people have been injured in the quake.
