New York: The United Nations Security Council (UNSC) passed a resolution 2222 (2015) for the protection of journalists in the conflict zones. The resolution was adopted following number of deaths and kidnappings of media professionals.
Lithuania’s Foreign Minister passed on the resolution that was adopted during a meet that was heard by nearly 70 speakers under the agenda item Protection of civilians in armed conflict.
The Security Council resolution condemned that they should take all reasonable steps to protect the journalists from such attacks and warned parties to conflicts, including governments and armed groups. The resolution persuades Member States to take active steps to ensure accountability.
61 journalists were killed in 2014 and 221 were imprisoned, 25 have died in January 2015. In last decade, 700 media workers were killed on the field because of their profession.
