Kolkata: He would befriend girls by creating a number of profiles with fictitious names in social networking site and would indulge in cheating them of handsome amount of cash. However, the youth’s dream run of fraudulent practices was cut short when he was apprehended by the Delhi Police on the basis of source information by the cyber crime police station in Kolkata.
Joint commissioner of police (crime) Pallab Kanti Ghosh said, “Louis Williams 24 was arrested by the Delhi Police on the basis of our information on charges of cheating the complainant of around Rs 6.4 lakhs whom he had befriended through a social networking site a few months back. Louis is a Nigerian by origin but has been staying in Delhi for the last few years.”
According to an official of cyber crime police station, the accused has created at least 15 fake profiles on a popular social networking site posing himself as a foreigner. “After striking up friendship he had told the victim that he valued their relationship and he would present her 100 pounds as a token of their love. The date and timing of the meeting was fixed for handing over the money. On the scheduled date of arrival in the city, he called her up and said that he had been detained at Delhi Airport as he was carrying foreign currency and he needs money for clearance. He provided an account number for depositing the amount and thus managed to claim Rs 6.4 lakhs from the innocent victim,” said an investigating officer.
“His modus operandi of amassing huge wealth through this method has been going on for the last few months. Though his prime focus was on Delhi, he has also befriended some girls in Kolkata too, the latest case being a clear testimony to the fact,” said an official of the cyber crime police station.
